About PsiQuantum

PsiQuantum is a quantum computing startup founded in 2016 by Jeremy O’Brien and colleagues from the University of Bristol with the vision of building scalable quantum computers using photonics.

It claims to be building the world’s first useful quantum computer.

The company employs silicon photonics to create qubits — the building blocks of quantum computing — using light particles to perform calculations.

Unlike competitors like IBM, Google, and Quantinuum, which rely on superconducting or trapped ion systems, PsiQuantum’s photonics-based approach is less affected by environmental noise and may become less error-prone.

PsiQuantum is working on a fault-tolerant quantum computer to achieve one million physical qubits, far surpassing today’s quantum systems. The company is building the first U.S. “utility-scale” quantum computer in Chicago, Illinois.

When quantum computing achieves its full potential, these machines could transform industries by solving complex problems like drug discovery and encryption, and training advanced AI models faster than any classical computer could.

Valuation

The most recent confirmed PsiQuantum valuation is $3.1 billion based on the Series D funding round announced in July 2021.

Q4 2024 transactions on the Hiive pre-IPO platform suggest the current valuation is closer to half of that value. A new funding round would reset the valuation and provide more confidence in the company’s business model.

IPO Potential

PsiQuantum is likely several years away from an IPO. The company is still validating its technology, reducing fault rates, and constructing its Chicago facility.

Furthermore, once the technology is functional, the company must validate that it can establish and maintain a viable business model, which is far from certain.

As the company grows in value and early investors seek substantial liquidity, an IPO may be in the cards. But leadership has not yet indicated their long-term intensions.

How to Invest in PsiQuantum Stock

Generally, it’s challenging to acquire shares of high-demand pre-IPO companies. Most investors must settle for buying the stock after it begins trading.

In PsiQuantum’s case, the cap table is mostly limited to top-tier venture capital firms. However, shares have traded hands on pre-IPO platforms, suggesting employees have become impatient with the company’s progress.

Indirect investing is a simple way to gain exposure to startups, but the payoffs are smaller than direct ownership.

At a $3 billion valuation, opportunities may be limited. However, pre-IPO investment opportunities may increase if another private funding round closes.

1. Access PsiQuantum Stock Pre-IPO

Pre-IPO investment platforms frequently offer PsiQuantum stock for early equity purchase as employees or early investors seek to liquidate some of their shares before the PsiQuantum IPO.

Accredited investors may access investment opportunities, provided they are registered on the platform and receive notifications about their availability.

Monitor pre-IPO investing platforms such as Linqto (recently available), Forge Global, EquityZen, and Hiive for share availability.

Investment minimums range from $2,500 to $50,000 or more on these platforms.

Pre-IPO investment platform memberships are open, but deal-specific minimum investment amounts may apply and vary.

Non-accredited investors can own pre-IPO companies via venture capital funds targeted to retail investors. Venture capital funds are a new asset class that emerged in 2022.

The Fundrise Innovation Fund (review) is the most promising for patient, long-term investors.

PsiQuantum is not currently held in the Fund.

2. Participate in the PsiQuantum IPO through a broker

Interested investors may find opportunities to invest during the IPO when it arrives. That means acquiring shares at the IPO price the night before the company begins trading.

The underwriters will tightly control shares. But savvy investors can access IPOs if you know where to look.

Once reserved for Wall Street’s wealthiest customers, IPO access has become more attainable to retail investors in the past five years.

Online brokers like the following give customers free access to IPOs, even with low account balances.

TradeStation has a longer track record of accessing more than 400 IPOs and secondary offerings via its partnership with ClickIPO.

Robinhood has the advantage of Silicon Valley networks and a history of getting allocations for high-profile IPOs.

Check out this list of best brokers for IPO investing to learn more about IPO access for retail investors.

3. Buy PsiQuantum after the Stock Begins Trading

Most investors will not be able to own PsiQuantum stock until after the IPO — though patient investors can wait until after the IPO to buy shares.

However, the company is unlikely to IPO until it has established a viable business model, though it could seek an IPO if other private quantum computing companies go public successfully.

Avoid chasing overpriced or overhyped IPOs soon after their debut, especially during periods of irrational exuberance. Once the company is public, evaluate shares like any other public stock.

Conclusion

PsiQuantum is positioned to make significant strides in the computing industry when its technology is ready to scale.

Having established a roadmap targeting fault-tolerant quantum computing (e.g., improved reliability and redundancies) by 2030, PsiQuantum has the potential to revolutionize healthcare, chemistry, mathematics, cryptology, and numerous other scientific fields.

Though still private, patient and persistent investors can gain access by monitoring pre-IPO marketplaces for shares. Investors must be accredited and should expect to pay substantial minimums starting at $2,500.

Upcoming quantum computing IPOs could entice PsiQuantum to accelerate its long-term ambitions to become a public company, as IPOs are excellent opportunities to raise funds. The Quantinuum IPO or a Google or IBM breakthrough could ignite public investor enthusiasm for quantum computing.

If the IPO is substantial enough, ordinary investors may get a chance to participate. Shares and access will be limited, but online brokers like TradeStation, Fidelity, and Robinhood are the most likely candidates to provide access to IPO allocations.

Investors interested in owning PsiQuantum stock should first look to Linqto or Hiive, then position themselves for the PsiQuantum IPO by opening and funding accounts with brokers offering IPO access.
