About Baseten

Baseten is a San Francisco-based startup that builds tools that help businesses run AI models quickly and reliably in production.

Founded in 2019 by Tuhin Srivastava, Amir Haghighat, Pankaj Gupta, and Philip Howes, the company grew from the founders’ firsthand experience with the difficulty of moving machine-learning models from research into production.

The name comes from the “base-ten” blocks Srivastava used as a child to learn arithmetic, reflecting the founders’ vision of making AI infrastructure more foundational and accessible.

Baseten provides infrastructure for deploying, scaling, and optimizing AI models, handling much of the underlying GPU and cloud complexity.

It also developed Truss, an open-source framework for packaging and deploying custom models.

IPO Potential

Baseten CEO Tuhin Srivastava has not specifically mentioned a forthcoming IPO. But he has spoken of creating a durable long-term public business.

When talking about the low cost of capital needed to scale, Elad Gil asked Srivastava on the No Priors podcast in 2026 if that impacted the decision to go public.

Srivastava said yes, that low cost of capital is a reason to IPO sooner.

With the company in the later stages of capital raising and the CEO is talking about a generational public company, the rhetoric suggests an IPO within 12-18 months.

An S-1 filing is the most accurate sign that an IPO may be forthcoming. The intent to move forward with an IPO is usually leaked to the press long before the S-1 filing becomes available to the public.

How to Invest in Baseten Stock

Most investors will need to wait for the IPO to invest in Baseten. The company is growing quickly and appears to be moving toward a public listing.

As a venture-backed startup, it is periodically available for investment on secondary markets and in pre-IPO funds for accredited investors.

Here are some potential options to own Baseten stock before, during, and after the IPO.

1. Invest Pre-IPO

Pre-IPO investment platforms may offer Baseten stock for purchase as employees or early investors seek to sell some of their shares before the Baseten IPO.

Accredited investors may access shares, provided they are registered on the platform and receive notifications about their availability.

Monitor pre-IPO investing platforms such as Hiive, Augment, Forge Global, and EquityZen for share availability.

If shares become available, expect to pay at least a $10,000 investment minimum, usually more.

Non-accredited investors can invest in pre-IPO companies via venture capital funds targeted at retail investors.

USVC by AngelList is one venture fund that holds a small equity stake in Baseten. The fund is available to non-accredited investors via their website or SoFi Invest.

2. Participate in the Baseten IPO through a broker

When a company eventually goes public, retail investors can often buy the stock during the IPO.

Larger IPO like Baseten are becoming more available to ordinary investors, who may have an opportunity to access the IPO through participating discount brokers.

Many online brokers allow investors to request IPO shares and invest at no additional cost, with low minimum investment thresholds. Here are a few:

Here’s the complete list of the best brokers for IPO investing to learn more about IPO access for retail investors.

3. Buy Baseten stock after the IPO

Most retail and institutional investors will need to wait until after the Baseten IPO to invest.

Waiting can be advantageous because the IPO hype eventually wanes and more established financials become available.

IPOs often start with high valuations due to the hype and structural features of IPOs like a small share float.

Stock prices may fall after the IPO price peak as shares unlock and early investors liquidate some of their shares.

Stock price declines below the IPO price can be excellent entry points for long-term investors.

Avoid buying overvalued shares immediately after the IPO.

Conclusion

Baseten still hasn’t filed an S-1, and Srivastava hasn’t spoken in more detail or indicated a timeline for going public, but the pieces are lining up.

With a later-stage Series F in the book, fast growth, cash in hand, a roster of blue-chip institutional backers, and a CEO openly talking about building a lasting public company, an IPO seems inevitable.

Though we’ve said this before for other startups, along comes a hyperscaler or other AI-native startup that acquires the company.

For now, the realistic paths to retail investor ownership are pre-IPO platforms mentioned for accredited investors, and monitoring available venture funds (like USVC) with a small stake in the company.

Or, for most investors, waiting to participate in the IPO

Investors without IPO access or who prefer to wait could find a post-IPO dip as an opportunity.
